Sometimes God chooses to fulfill his promise to bless us in a spiritual rather than in a literal manner so as to cultivate greater intimacy between us and him. This is a much better fulfillment of God’s promises. He prefers our intimacy to our immunity. But why can we not have both? Sometimes he does give us both and someday it will be both (e.g., the end of Job’s life). But sometimes immunity is a hindrance to true intimacy. As Satan argued, it may be that Job was following God only because God had put a hedge around him. And as Jesus said to the crowd, “You are following me only because of the loaves.” When we follow God is it really because of the person of the Giver or because of his gifts?
